Insurance May Cover Your Care

If heavy, overly large breasts are causing chronic pain or skin infections, your medical insurance may contribute to the cost of your breast reduction procedure. Your insurance provider may require letters, photos, a list of nonsurgical treatments that have failed to improve your comfort, and other documentation before authorizing coverage.

Each insurer is different, but we can help determine if medical coverage is a possibility in your case. If you have out-of-pocket costs, we can explore financing options with you so that breast reduction surgery is well within reach.

Common Reasons
for Breast Reduction

You may be a good candidate for a breast reduction if you’re at a stable weight, are in good overall health, and you:

  • Wish to improve asymmetrical breasts
  • Want to alleviate back and shoulder pain
  • Have shoulder grooves from bra straps
  • Want to feel more confident and at home in your body
  • Want to improve your mobility and exercise with ease
  • Are bothered by the feeling that your breasts are too large
  • Experience skin irritation under your breasts and want to reduce it
  • Have a hard time shopping for clothes and want your clothes to fit better

Dr. Tandon can determine if breast reduction surgery is the best option for you during a consultation at our Manhattan office.

The Procedure

Breast reduction surgery typically takes two to four hours. Most patients go home on the same day.

Anesthesia

Dr. Tandon will first make sure you’re comfortable with general anesthesia that allows you to sleep through your surgical procedure. You will be monitored to ensure your safety.

Incisions

Dr. Tandon will make incisions in your breast tissue. Incisions may be made around the areola, vertically down, and along the breast crease.

Breast Reduction

Dr. Tandon will remove excess skin, breast tissue, and fat. He may use liposuction to remove excess fat and reshape the breasts.

Nipple Placement

Dr. Tandon may raise the nipple and areola and place them in a symmetrical, aesthetically pleasing position. Your nipple-areolar complex may also be reduced in size.

Sutures

Dr. Tandon will place sutures to hold everything in place while you heal. You may also be given a surgical bra to offer support and stability in the weeks after your plastic surgery.

Final Results Over
3-12 Months

It can take about three to six months for swelling to subside and about a year for your surgical scars to fade. However, you can expect to see an immediate reduction in the size of your breasts, and chronic neck and shoulder pain can fade in a few weeks. You may also notice an improvement in your posture.

Our Manhattan team will schedule follow-up visits so Dr. Tandon can ensure you’re healing well. He will clear you for work and physical activity, and provide you with tips to minimize scarring and complications.

FAQ About Breast Reduction Surgery in Manhattan, NY

What is breast reduction surgery?

Breast reduction surgery (reduction mammaplasty) is a procedure that removes excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to achieve a smaller, lighter, and more proportionate bust. It's one of the most common and highly satisfying cosmetic procedures, providing both aesthetic and medical benefits.

What is the recovery time for breast reduction surgery?

Most patients return to light daily activities within two weeks and resume their full physical activities in four to six weeks. Dr. Tandon will provide a personalized recovery timeline and follow-up schedule.

Will I have scars after breast reduction?

Some scarring is expected, though our skilled Manhattan surgeon uses precise techniques to minimize visibility. Scars fade significantly over 12-18 months. Post-surgical scar treatments like silicone sheets and laser therapy can further improve their appearance.

Can I breastfeed after breast reduction surgery?

Many women can still breastfeed after a reduction, though it depends on the breast reduction technique used and how much tissue was removed. If future breastfeeding is important to you, discuss this with Dr. Tandon at your consultation so he can plan accordingly.
