A year after my final surgery I can say I’m very pleased with my reconstruction and would recommend Dr. Tandon to anyone in the same situation."

What Is Hybrid Breast Reconstruction? The Best of Both Worlds

Also known as composite breast reconstruction, hybrid breast reconstruction combines the benefits of fat transfer with implant reconstruction. Below is a closer look at each procedure and how hybrid reconstruction combines the two techniques to create your dream results.

DIEP Flap

DIEP Flap diagram

The DIEP flap procedure is used for women who do not want breast implants. During the flap procedure, fat, skin, and blood vessels are removed from your lower abdomen and transferred to the breasts.

Since this procedure uses your tissue, it creates the most natural-looking results. However, some may not have enough excess fat in their abdomen to create their desired breast size and shape.

Breast Implants

Breast Implant

Breast implants are one of the most common forms of breast reconstruction. Our New Orleans-area practice offers both saline and silicone implant options. You and our plastic surgeon will review these options before surgery to determine which is right for you.

Breast implants enhance the volume, shape, and symmetry of your breasts. This is a great option for those who don't have enough fat for a full flap procedure.

Hybrid Reconstruction

A combination of the two procedures, hybrid reconstruction is great for women who want the natural look of fat transfer but do not have enough excess tissue to reach their desired size.

During a hybrid reconstruction, Dr. Tandon will perform the flap procedure to transfer autologous tissue (your natural fat, skin, muscle, and vessels) to your breasts and then insert implants to create your desired look.

The Benefits Of Hybrid Breast Reconstruction

Natural Results

The flap procedure provides autologous tissue coverage over the implant, creating more natural-looking results. Your breasts will look and feel more like natural tissue than if you were to receive just implants.

Smaller Implant

Hybrid breast reconstruction combines the flap procedure with an implant. A smaller implant can be used since you will have the added volume of your autologous tissue.

Durable Solution

Women who have undergone a mastectomy are typically left with thin skin that can easily show wrinkling in an implant. Hybrid reconstruction adds a layer of protection over the implant making it a durable alternative to implant reconstruction.

Boosted Confidence

Combining the flap procedure with breast implants enhances your womanly contours by altering your breast size and shape and by reducing the size of your abdomen. Many breast cancer survivors have a significant boost in body confidence and overall self-esteem.

Are There Any Risks To Hybrid Breast Reconstruction?

Selecting a skilled and experienced plastic surgeon like Dr. Tandon is the best way to minimize your risk of complications before and after surgery. However, like all procedures, hybrid breast reconstruction comes with some risks.

Implant-Related Risks

As with any implant procedure, your breast implant has a risk of rupturing or deflating. With implants, there is also a risk of capsular contracture, where scar tissue forms around the implant.

Although rare, we will continue to monitor your recovery to ensure you are healing properly and there is no sign of an issue with your breast implant.

Flap-Related Risks

The development of a hernia or muscle weakness at the donor site is a potential risk to the DIEP flap procedure.

In extremely rare cases, patients develop tissue necrosis, where the transferred tissue lacks sufficient blood supply and dies. Tissue necrosis can be treated by surgically removing the dead tissue and lumps it can create.

Surgery-Related Risks

Surgeons

General surgical risks like bleeding, slow healing of incisions, and infection are still possible. However, with an experienced plastic surgeon performing the procedure in a state-of-the-art facility, your risk of developing any of these complications is extremely low.

Contact us immediately if you believe you are developing adverse symptoms.
