DIEP Flap Breast Reconstruction

illustration of breast surgeryDeep inferior epigastric perforator surgery, or DIEP flap surgery, is an advanced type of natural breast reconstruction. During the procedure, tissue from the lower abdomen is used to rebuild the breast after a mastectomy. This muscle-sparing technique offers substantial benefits over earlier reconstructive surgeries. Dr. Ravi Tandon can perform the DIEP flap method at our New Orleans, LA, practice to restore the size, shape, and symmetry of your breasts. During your initial consultation at our office, Dr. Tandon can discuss the benefits of this method and determine your candidacy for natural breast reconstruction.

Benefits of Muscle-Sparing Reconstruction

During this procedure, Dr. Tandon removes fat, skin, and blood vessels from the wall of the lower belly. Using this tissue, he can rebuild your breast and create a smooth, natural-looking appearance. Dr. Tandon can incorporate this technique into immediate and delayed reconstructions.

During DIEP flap surgery, no muscle is removed. This method has a variety of benefits over older versions of natural breast reconstruction, including:

  • Faster recovery
  • Lower risk of complications
  • Preservation of core abdominal strength
  • Lasting results after fewer treatments

In addition, the removal of fat and skin from the lower abdomen creates similar results to a tummy tuck. After this procedure, most patients benefit from a fully reconstructed breast as well as a flat, toned stomach.

Special Considerations

While this method can offer significant benefits for qualifying clients, it is not for everyone. DIEP flap may not be a good choice if you:

  • Do not have enough extra belly tissue
  • Have already had abdominal surgery, such as a colostomy or a tummy tuck
  • Have small abdominal blood vessels
  • Do not want an additional scar at the donor site

Dr. Tandon can discuss your options with you and consult with your physician to determine if the DIEP flap or an alternative natural breast reconstruction method is better for you. In some case, he may recommend reconstructing your breast using an implant instead of natural tissue.

The Treatment Process

To begin the procedure, Dr. Tandon will create a flap in your lower abdomen and remove skin, underlying tissue, and blood vessels. He will then tighten the underlying tissue to ensure smooth results and close the incision. Using advanced microsurgical techniques, Dr. Tandon will reattach the blood vessels into the chest area and use the tissue and skin to sculpt a new bust.

During DIEP flap surgery, no muscle is removed. This method has a variety of benefits over older versions of natural breast reconstruction.

Roughly three months after the initial surgery, patients may choose to return for a touch-up procedure to improve the symmetry and overall contour of the breast. Dr. Tandon can also perform some body contouring treatments at this time to complement your results. The final step is the reconstruction of the nipple, which can also be performed at our office.
