Prophylactic Mastectomy
Also referred to as preventative mastectomy, a prophylactic mastectomy is performed before breast cancer is even diagnosed. The procedure is recommended for women who have a high risk of developing breast cancer later in life. One breast or both breasts may be removed during this preventative procedure.
Who Should Consider Preventative Mastectomy
Prophylactic mastectomies are recommended for women who:
- Have more than one close relative with breast cancer
- Have tested positive for BRCA1, BRCA2, PALB2, CDH1, PTEN, or TP53 gene mutations

Can My Mastectomy Be Covered By Insurance?
The financial aspect of a mastectomy can also be a burden, especially if you are considering breast reconstruction surgery.
Fortunately, thanks to the Women's Health and Cancer Rights Act of 1998 (WHCRA), your mastectomy and reconstruction should be covered by insurance if you have breast cancer.
